Emma was born and grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne. Since childhood,
she has been drawn to true-crime stories, developing an encyclopaedic
knowledge of real-life murder cases from the early 20th century. She’s
also fascinated by unorthodox women: past, present and fictional. In
her writing, she likes to poke around the darker reaches of the human
mind, and to explore what people are capable of under extreme
circumstances.

Emma’s first novel, Little Deaths, was longlisted for the Women’s Prize
for Fiction, for the Desmond Elliott Prize, for the Crime Writers’
Association Gold Dagger Award, and for The Guardian’s Not the Booker
prize.

Her second novel, Other Women, was published in February 2023 and was a Zoe Ball BBC Radio 2 book club pick. Emma lives and works in London.
