JULA Submission Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in submitting to JULA.

Before you submit your work to us please:

  • Check we are the right agency for your work: visit our website and social media to learn more about our agency and clients

  • Choose an agent to submit to: read our agent profile and wishlist to find the right agent for your work (if your book isn’t what they are looking for, you can find more agent profiles at The Writers' and Artists Yearbook)

  • Check they are accepting submissions

How to submit to us:

  • Email your submission to submissions@jounwin.co.uk. We generally do not accept submissions by post or delivered personally however if this is a barrier to your submitting to us, please do get in touch

  • Include a cover letter, a one to two page synopsis and the first three chapters or 50 pages of your manuscript. If submitting a proposal, you don’t need to send a separate synopsis

  • Include your cover letter in the body of your email

  • Attach all documents in Word format. PDFs are accepted for manuscripts containing images or if there is a particular reason for doing so

  • Number pages and use 1.5 line spacing where possible

  • Identify all attachments with your name and the title, for example, Synopsis THE DOGS Tom Jones, Chapters THE DOGS Tom Jones

  • In the subject line of your email, please put the name of the agent you are submitting to, your name and the title of your manuscript, followed by, in brackets, the type of book it is, for example, FAO Jo Unwin, Tom Jones, THE DOGS (commercial fiction)

Please note:

  • Jo is looking for authors based in the UK and Ireland and sometimes Australia and New Zealand. We will only take on authors from the USA in exceptional circumstances

  • We do not accept work that has been generated in large part by artificial intelligence (AI) systems, although we do understand that AI is sometimes used by authors in early development of their work.

  • If you have written multiple books, please only submit one at a time, preferably your most recent one, you can mention others in your submission letter.

What happens next:

  • When you submit your work to us you will receive an email acknowledgement

  • Unfortunately we are unable to respond individually to submissions unless we are considering representation

  • Please let us know if you have had interest in your work from other agents, even if you’ve not heard back from us. Please respond to your original email and add ‘UPDATE’ to the subject line, for example, UPDATE FAO Jo Unwin, Tom Jones, THE DOGS (commercial fiction)

Please do remember that the relationship between an author and agent is very personal, so you may write something fantastic that just isn’t for JULA. There are so many brilliant books that we’ll never read; bookshops are heaving with books that someone loves, but we’ll never get round to.
